Located on Oxford Street in central Brighton, St Peter’s Health Centre is a new NHS medical facility providing vital primary care services. The BREEAM Excellent building stitches into a historic streetscape, blending sustainability, heritage sensitivity, and essential urban healthcare.

The new St Peter’s Health Centre in Brighton provides much-needed, modern primary healthcare to the city’s centre. Designed by Deacon + Richardson Architects, the new building replaces outdated premises with a contemporary, highly functional medical facility.
Set along Oxford Street, the design responds to the urban context by carefully ‘stitching in’ to a historic parade of shops, including a locally listed heritage asset. The building features a steel frame construction, with a textured brickwork façade and a recessed top floor clad in standing seam zinc, offering a respectful contrast to its traditional surroundings.
Inside, the NHS health centre delivers 26 clinical rooms, a multi-purpose group space, and administration areas across multiple levels. A dedicated pharmacy unit is integrated into the street frontage and is expected to open soon, enhancing the public-facing offering.
Built to achieve BREEAM Excellent, the centre adheres to strict sustainability standards, in line with NHS funding criteria. The environmental strategy was integrated from the outset to reduce energy consumption, improve patient wellbeing, and support long-term operational efficiency.
The development took place over phased construction stages to allow the existing practice to remain operational. Despite significant logistical challenges, including urban site constraints and the insolvency of the original contractor, the scheme was successfully delivered and now stands as a vital new asset in Brighton’s healthcare landscape.
