A new 1,400m² medical centre in Storrington, West Sussex, replaces outdated facilities with a BREEAM Excellent building. Referencing local vernacular forms and materials, the design delivers 20 consulting rooms, 4 treatment rooms, and a triple-height atrium, enhancing both patient experience and environmental performance.

Located in the village of Storrington, West Sussex, this new medical centre replaces a series of outdated facilities with a purpose-built, state-of-the-art healthcare environment offering 1,400m² of clinical space. Designed by Deacon + Richardson Architects, the building includes four treatment rooms and twenty consulting rooms, meeting the growing needs of the local GP practice.
Sitting in a sensitive rural location, the building has been carefully composed as a collection of smaller volumes to reduce its apparent scale and blend seamlessly into its surroundings. The form references the vernacular character of the area, incorporating double-gabled wings, pitched roofs, and locally inspired materials such as dark timber cladding, flint, and two distinct tones of brickwork.
The façades feature vertical recessed brick detailing, offering a subtle nod to Storrington’s traditional architecture while adding a modern architectural twist.
Inside, the client’s vision for a light-filled, uplifting interior is realised through a naturally ventilated triple-height atrium, connecting the reception, waiting areas, and staff circulation spaces. Generous glazing at corridor ends brings daylight and landscape views deep into the building, enhancing the visitor and staff experience.
A bright and cheerful colour palette adds warmth and ease throughout. The project prioritises wellbeing, energy efficiency, and sustainable design, achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating and high scores in both the health & wellbeing and energy categories.
The scheme was awarded an LABC South-East Building Excellence Award, and was praised as a modern, highly sustainable, and contextually sensitive rural healthcare facility.
