This award-winning Grade II listed church conversion in Sussex created a 1,100m² medical centre and pharmacy while preserving the building’s historic fabric. A freestanding internal structure allows reversibility, and sustainable services were integrated with care. The scheme won multiple regional awards for design and conservation excellence.
Deacon and Richardson were commissioned to convert a Grade II Listed redundant church into a 1100m² Medical Centre and attached pharmacy.
This challenging project created a series of new exciting spaces within the old building. The design approach was considerate and respectful, disturbing as little of the historic fabric as possible. Patients can now experience the historical features as they move through the building.
The main construction principle was to create an internal supporting structure independent of the existing building fabric. This means any construction work in association with the new building use could be reversed and if ever required the building could be returned to its former use.
A new 100m² pharmacy tucked behind the existing listed boundary wall was introduced. This links to the revamped entrance area and courtyard.
The scheme achieved BREEAM Very Good under the government’s environmental ratings. A completely new building services system was delicately integrated into the building fabric. The services design focuses on natural ventilation to minimise the ongoing operational costs. An array of Air Source Heat Pumps were installed within the existing bell tower minimising visual and noise impact.
The building won the 2017 Sussex Heritage Trust Award, the 2018 LABC South-East Building Excellence Award and was also shortlisted for an LABC National Award.
